Is This for You?

Common Reasons for Acute Dialysis Referral.

Acute kidney failure can happen suddenly and the medical language around it can be confusing. Here are the most common situations that lead to an acute dialysis referral.

Sudden Kidney Failure (Acute Kidney Injury)

A sudden loss of kidney function caused by severe infection, trauma, surgery complications, or medication toxicity. When the kidneys stop working abruptly, dialysis is required immediately to filter waste and fluid from the blood.

Post-Hospital Stabilisation

Patients who have been treated in an ICU or hospital ward and are stable enough for discharge but still require short-term dialysis sessions while their kidneys recover.

Severe Fluid Overload

When dangerous levels of fluid accumulate in the body and cannot be managed through medication alone, acute dialysis is used to remove the excess fluid rapidly and safely.

Physician-Ordered Toxin Clearance

In certain cases of poisoning or medication overdose, a physician may order emergency dialysis to clear specific toxins from the bloodstream.

If any of these apply to you or your family member — contact us immediately.

How to Refer a Patient

Three Steps to Acute Admission at Leru.

We have streamlined our referral process to remove delays and get patients into treatment as quickly as possible.

01

Contact Us Directly

Call or WhatsApp our team with the patient's current situation — their diagnosis, their attending physician's recommendation, and their medical aid details. You do not need to have everything in order before you call. Contact us first and we will guide you through what is needed.

02

Clinical and Medical Aid Confirmation

Our team will confirm our clinical availability and coordinate with the patient's medical aid for emergency authorisation. Acute dialysis is classified as an emergency medical event by most medical aid schemes — we manage this process on your behalf to avoid delays.

03

Admission and First Session

Once confirmed, the patient is admitted to our Bronkhorstspruit centre and their first acute dialysis session begins under the supervision of our clinical team.

Clinical Standards

What We Provide for Acute Patients.

Acute kidney failure patients require careful, attentive clinical management. Our team is experienced in managing acute dialysis cases with the same standard of clinical rigour applied to our chronic patients.

Continuous Session Monitoring

Every acute patient is monitored throughout their session — blood pressure, fluid removal, and treatment response are tracked continuously by our clinical team from start to finish.

Water Purification

Our dedicated water purification system ensures that every session — acute or chronic — uses clinically safe, purified water.

Uninterrupted Power

Our facility is equipped with generator backup to ensure treatment is never interrupted by power outages or load shedding.

Coordinated Care

We work directly with the patient's referring physician to ensure their acute treatment plan is followed accurately and that progress is communicated back to the referring doctor throughout the admission.

What Comes Next

From Acute Crisis to Stability.

Acute kidney failure is frightening — for patients and for families. But for many patients, acute dialysis is a temporary measure while the kidneys recover or while a longer-term treatment plan is established.

At Leru Renal Services we support patients through this transition. For patients whose kidneys recover sufficiently, acute dialysis may be a short-term intervention. For patients who progress to chronic kidney failure, we are already here — the same centre, the same team, the same standard of care.

You do not have to find a new centre when the acute phase is over. We are already your centre.

Medical Aid

We Handle Medical Aid Authorisation.

Acute dialysis is considered an emergency medical event by most medical aid schemes, with emergency authorisation pathways available for urgent treatment.

Our team manages the medical aid pre-authorisation process directly to help ensure treatment is not delayed by administrative procedures.

Simply provide your medical aid details and we will assist you from there.
